Our Route

Zero dysentery deaths, six individuals, over 8,000 miles, and countless memories.

In the pursuit of becoming greater outdoorsmen, we sought to blend the past and the present through a journey into the American West.

After deliberations and consultation, we decided to embark on the Oregon Trail, the most significant emigrant trail in North America. On the 2,170 mile expedition we gained great admiration for the 19th century pioneers who risked their lives to seek a “new beginning.” Along our own journey, we each found our own “new beginning” amidst the Coronavirus pandemic. While our journey was much less of an upheaval than that of the Oregon Trail emigrants, disconnecting from our normal daily routines this summer allowed us to gain new perspectives and develop personally and collectively.

Our route was written and refined by Reed Milnor, Ben Poag, and Sam Cogan in the weeks leading up to our departure on June 8, 2020. Throughout the planning process we kept in mind our core tenets: adventure, brotherhood, challenge, and intentionality.

Acknowledgment

A special thanks to Evan Milnor for inspiring our trip name, the Covid Wagon, and to George and Laurie Milnor for allowing us to make the family van into our home-away-from-home for over a month. In addition, the Garner family and Tom Amidon provided advice regarding Glacier National Park that proved to be invaluable — thank you.
